🍄 Love is sacred

Hi Reader,

Welcome to this edition of the Maps of the Mind newsletter.

🍄 Love is Sacred

It’s been a while. As some of you have guessed from my silence, my mother passed away. She departed at the end of May, just over two months ago now.

I've been quiet since. It’s been the greatest loss of my life, and I wanted to step away and slow down.

But alongside the grief, I also feel incredibly fortunate that I still carry such a deep well of love for Mum. Over the last months, I've been discovering new depths of love in ways that have been painful, but also beautiful.

Anyway, this felt like the right moment to say hello again.

One thing I know now

I was sat next to my mother as she passed; I kissed her and told her I loved her moments before she took her final breath.

What I saw and felt in the months and weeks leading up to that — what passed between us — was a new experience of love, something else. So challenging and so beautiful at the same time. What I’ve found has been a deep appreciation for love, and the word that seems to best describe it is sacred.

Love is sacred.

That’s it.

That’s not something I can explain or even have any desire to.
It’s not a view or perspective that I intend to convince you or anyone of.
It’s not something I expect anyone else to believe.

It’s just something that I now know.

And it is overwhelmingly beautiful.

It's not something Mum ‘taught’ me. It’s not a lesson she passed on.

It’s just something I’ve felt and come to know.

In the way Mum faced the end.
In the way I could see her continue to look out for me, right until the end, even as the illness took over.
In the way friends, family, nurses, community workers, and so many others showed up for her, and for me.

As I write this, with tears running down my face, I feel it again.
Mum’s love is part of me now. I guess it always has been, but I understand it differently now.

Thank you to all of you who reached out and showed your support in any way over the last year. I’m not sure you’ll know how much it has meant.

I'll be writing you again from now.

---

A reflection for you today:

👉 When have you witnessed love? When have you felt it?
When have you seen it quietly at work in your own life?

I'd love to hear if anything came to mind. I hope you'll reply and tell me about it.

Hi Reader, Welcome to this edition of the Maps of the Mind newsletter. 🍄 I Learned to Speak Alien Two Sundays ago, I learned to speak alien. So did about two thousand other people. I was at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh. It's a grand old domed concert hall, and I was up in the second balcony. On stage were two men from Quebec. They don't speak to their audience in any language that exists. The band is Angine de Poitrine. One guitarist, one drummer. The guitarist plays a double-necked half...

Hi Reader, Welcome to this edition of the Maps of the Mind newsletter. 🍄 We would have gone in there I've been in Scotland since Saturday. I was in Edinburgh for the Psych fest, and walking through town on the Saturday evening, I passed a run of Chinese places, a noodle bar with the windows steamed up, and something in me just went. We would have gone in there. That was the whole thought. Mum and I would have clocked it, checked out the menu, and probably gone in. We did city breaks together....

Hi Reader, Welcome to this edition of the Maps of the Mind newsletter. 🍄 Presence (and trees) In one of the first weeks after my mum died, on a night when sleep wouldn't come, I found myself sitting at my bedroom window watching a tree. Not doing anything with it. Not journaling about it or thinking it through. Just watching the leaves move. I don't know how long I sat there. But somehow it helped. I remember trees coming up in a trip-sitting workshop I attended a decade ago. The facilitator...
