🍄 Ask it on the way down

Hi Reader,

Welcome to this edition of the Maps of the Mind newsletter.

🍄 Getting my sleep back

I’ve been ill. A respiratory bug took me down for most of a week, and it's been lingering after that.

I watched a lot of films. Kill Bills, all The Hunger Games, a few others. In a weird way it was a nice change of pace, having that time, despite the circumstances.

But since then, it’s been difficult getting my sleep cycle back.

So recently, sleep has been the thing that keeps coming up for me. My sleep cycle, my sleep hygiene, and how much they affect my energy. It hasn’t taken much to knock it back off whilst I recover. Seeing a friend on a weeknight, or not getting into my wind-down routine can be enough.

Most of us have something like this. The thing that pops up again and again, whatever else is going on.

It might be a habit we keep meaning to change, or a problem that never quite gets resolved. An emotional habit, like the same old worry. Or a painful situation that keeps repeating itself, just with different people.

When you’re preparing for a psychedelic session, that recurring thing is worth paying attention to.

Not necessarily as the focus. But it’s worth keeping in the back of your mind. And if you’re unsure what your intention is, it’s a really good question to ask.

What keeps coming back?

Often we don’t get to decide what a session is about. So even if it doesn’t come up as the main bit, there might still be a chance for some insight on it.

On the way down there’s often a good moment to ask that question. And if you’ve got a sitter, they can bring it back up for you on the downslope.

Then the window afterwards is the chance to rewire it. Our neuroplasticity is up after a big experience, so it’s a good time to take some action on what keeps coming back.

It’s a balance, of course. Do what you can, but don’t be so disciplined that you’re hard on yourself, or expect to do it all perfectly.

Make an honest and sincere effort.

And if the same theme keeps coming up in session after session, that might be a sign it needs more integration.

The thing that keeps coming back is telling you where to look.

A reflection for you today:

👉 What’s the thing that keeps coming back for you: a habit, a feeling, a situation that keeps repeating itself? Where does it show up: in your days, in your sessions, or both? What would an honest and sincere effort with it look like this month?

What did this bring up for you? I hope you'll reply and tell me about it.

Hi Reader, Welcome to this edition of the Maps of the Mind newsletter. 🍄 Load and Capacity On Monday I sat in a physio's office with a sore shoulder, and he said two words I've continued to think about, and how they relate to growth and healing as well as physical recovery. The two words: Load and capacity. Pain shows up when the load you put on something is more than it can currently take. That's the whole idea. However, the answer isn't to stop using it. The leaflet he sent the next morning...

Hi Reader, Welcome to this edition of the Maps of the Mind newsletter. 🍄 I Learned to Speak Alien Two Sundays ago, I learned to speak alien. So did about two thousand other people. I was at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh. It's a grand old domed concert hall, and I was up in the second balcony. On stage were two men from Quebec. They don't speak to their audience in any language that exists. The band is Angine de Poitrine. One guitarist, one drummer. The guitarist plays a double-necked half...

Hi Reader, Welcome to this edition of the Maps of the Mind newsletter. 🍄 We would have gone in there I've been in Scotland since Saturday. I was in Edinburgh for the Psych fest, and walking through town on the Saturday evening, I passed a run of Chinese places, a noodle bar with the windows steamed up, and something in me just went. We would have gone in there. That was the whole thought. Mum and I would have clocked it, checked out the menu, and probably gone in. We did city breaks together....
