🍄 Tending the space

Hi Reader,

Welcome to this edition of the newsletter.

🍄 Tending The Space

Over the last couple of months or so, since my Mum has been homebound, we have been slowly re-shaping her room.

A new bed. A different mattress.
Tiered bedside tables, to hold everything within reach. Creams, oils, medicines, all with their place on them.
A special water bottle that hangs from the bed.
Different pillows and cushions for different purposes.

Other small things like a phone holder and a new heat bag.

The layout has also changed to accommodate a chair beside the bed for company, and a TV has been moved into a viewing position. And of course, the route to the bathroom is clear and easy.

Some of these were medical provisions, some were for practicality, and some were for comfort.

Some have also been about the feeling of the space.

A second lamp with a softer light was brought in. There has been an evolving altar, with photos, cards, and fresh flowers.

It has been quite amazing to see the change, and one day, as we talked about how refined her space has become, she even remarked with a smile on her face, 'I think I have it better than the Queen!'

-

Of course, it’s made me think about “setting”.

Not as something you set once, but something you keep tending to.

The same is true in psychedelic work.

People often think of setting as a mark on a checklist.
Room sorted. Done.

And while it is, of course, good to have it set at the start of a session, in reality, it’s alive.

Sometimes you might want to open a window to let some fresh air in.
Or dim the lights when things are turning inward.

Maybe you bring someone a blanket, adjust the music, or clear away some clutter.

It might be moving something that somehow suddenly feels… off.

Small shifts, but they can ripple through the whole experience.

Setting isn’t just where something happens.
It’s part of what’s happening.

I’ve been seeing that in a different way recently.

A room can make things easier. Softer. Safer.
Not by being perfect, but by being cared for.

And while things might be amplified on psychedelics, remember that setting matters when you're not high, too.

-

So here's a question for you today.

Where in your life could you tend the space a little more?
Not overhaul it or perfect it.
Just care for it, so it supports you better.

The space you create is part of the experience you have.

What did this bring up for you? I hope you'll reply and tell me about it. I love reading every reply.

Hi Reader, Welcome to this edition of the Maps of the Mind newsletter. 🍄 How We Meet What Happens The last couple of newsletters have been about setting. The space. The person in the room. There's another part that matters just as much. How we meet what's happening. ⸻ As my mum’s in palliative care, I’ve been seeing this up close. She knows she’s moving toward the end of her life.Toward that final transition. And what’s struck me is the way she’s approaching it. Not with panic. Or constant...

Hi Reader, Welcome to this edition of the Maps of the Mind newsletter. 🍄 The Person in the Room Some of the nurses who come to see my mum feel different the moment they walk into the room. They slow down. They give their full attention when they ask a question. They patiently listen to the answer. Others… it’s more of a checklist. Pain?Bowels?Medication?Next. It feels like they're just ticking boxes, getting the job done. Same job. Same tasks.Very different experience. It’s not just what they...

Hi Reader, It’s been a little while since I last wrote. I've had other priorities in this period whilst we’ve been figuring out carer schedules, nurse visits, and syringe drivers. Alongside that, I’ve been learning what it actually means to show up for someone day to day. 🍄 Holding Space (At Home) Lately, I’ve been thinking about how life can prepare us in ways we don’t expect. For years, I’ve sat with people in altered states. Holding space, watching breath, listening without trying to fix....
