📘 Books for the Soul

Hi Reader,

Happy New Year! Best wishes for 2026 and beyond!

Welcome to this week's edition of the Maps of the Mind newsletter.

🍄 Books For The Spirit

An old friend messaged me recently and asked for my top go-to recommendations for spiritual books.

He's not someone I expected to go down that road, but he’s now five months alcohol-free, and open to exploring something deeper.

He said he wasn’t quite sure what he was looking for, just something meaningful, not too heavy, and spiritually nourishing. A kind of therapeutic life inspiration.

As I sent him a few titles, I thought these might be worth sharing with you too.

Here were my recommendations:

📘 The Four Agreements – Don Miguel Ruiz

Simple, practical, and deeper than it first seems. These four principles—be impeccable with your word, don’t take things personally, don’t make assumptions, and always do your best—are the kind you can carry for life. A spiritual classic.

📗 Peace is Every Step – Thich Nhat Hanh

Mindfulness in motion. Very short chapters, clear language with a poetic quality, and the gentle power of presence. It can help you drop into the now without needing to escape. Especially good for those replacing old habits with deeper awareness.

📙 When Things Fall Apart – Pema Chödrön

Tough times, tender wisdom. Pema writes like a calm friend in the storm. This one’s perfect for moments of change, when you’re rebuilding or reorienting. She brings Buddhist insight without dogma. Just honest, grounding truth.

📕 The Power of Now – Eckhart Tolle

A modern entry point to timeless wisdom. It’s gained cliché status for a reason, because it can shift your lens. If you’ve been chasing change, this book slows you down, centers you, and reminds you the door is always open… now.

Those are a few that came to mind. The kind of books worth revisiting.

What did I miss? What would you add?

I’d love to hear your most meaningful spiritual or sobriety-adjacent reads. Hit reply and let me know what’s shaped you.

📚 Microdose of Wisdom

“Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few are to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention”
— Francis Bacon

Hi Reader, Welcome to this edition of the Maps of the Mind newsletter. 🍄 How We Meet What Happens The last couple of newsletters have been about setting. The space. The person in the room. There's another part that matters just as much. How we meet what's happening. ⸻ As my mum’s in palliative care, I’ve been seeing this up close. She knows she’s moving toward the end of her life.Toward that final transition. And what’s struck me is the way she’s approaching it. Not with panic. Or constant...

Hi Reader, Welcome to this edition of the Maps of the Mind newsletter. 🍄 The Person in the Room Some of the nurses who come to see my mum feel different the moment they walk into the room. They slow down. They give their full attention when they ask a question. They patiently listen to the answer. Others… it’s more of a checklist. Pain?Bowels?Medication?Next. It feels like they're just ticking boxes, getting the job done. Same job. Same tasks.Very different experience. It’s not just what they...

Hi Reader, Welcome to this edition of the newsletter. 🍄 Tending The Space Over the last couple of months or so, since my Mum has been homebound, we have been slowly re-shaping her room. A new bed. A different mattress. Tiered bedside tables, to hold everything within reach. Creams, oils, medicines, all with their place on them.A special water bottle that hangs from the bed.Different pillows and cushions for different purposes. Other small things like a phone holder and a new heat bag. The...
